Welcome to the Port Moresby Cancer Relief Society (POMCRS) Website. This website has been designed to create awareness of the society's involvement in the community as well as introduce and acknowledge the active individuals and organisations of POMCRS.
The organisation is committed to complimenting the work of the medical professionals in the care of cancer patients at the Port Moresby General Hospital Cancer Ward.
Strategies are implemented for raising funds to combat cancer and provide adequate treatment facilities for patients. Funds are directed towards purchasing cancer treatment equipment, medicine, organising fundraising events and raising awareness for cancer prevention, detection and care.
The organisation is particularly important to public health in Papua New Guinea (PNG) because of the lack of health services currently provided. Cancer education and the provision of adequate health services for cancer patients are needed due to the large number of Papua New Guineans affected by cancer.
Breast Cancer is the 3rd largest cancer killer in PNG. As with a lot of threatening issues in PNG, it's considered taboo.
Mothers, daughters, friends - who do you talk to when there’s a change in your body some place private without feeling ashamed.
This October we hope to evoke change.
Cancer affects everybody, and breast cancer's no different. Men, although only a small fraction, can also get breast cancer.
The trouble is being able to talk about it. Knowing what to look for, what course of action to take if you do suspect something, and what treatments are available to you.
Getting to know your breast, feeling your boobies, its the best form of prevention - early detection. There's nothing to be ashamed of and nothing stopping you from protecting yourself except your own inhibitions.
If you care about someone, why not remind them to do something so simple that may save their life.
The Port Moresby Cancer Relief Society are detected to spreading awareness about all cancers, this October we will be assisting the PNG Breast Cancer Foundation in hosting workshops, holding awareness gatherings and fundraisers such as the Pink Ribbon Brunch and The Pink Party. We will also be creating for the first time, in partnership with NewAgeWoman Magazine the first ever Pink Edition focusing entirely on all things Pink!
